Should the Packers run the table and finish the regular season a perfect , how will history remember them in relation to the New England Patriots? Taking only the regular season into consideration, the '07 Pats feat is immediately lessened by the '11 Packers.
On the surface when football fans look back, seeing that two teams went five seasons apart from each other does not seem all that special. That's not taking anything away from the presumably perfect Packers, it's just that the more times something happens in sports, the less special it is see: hitting plus home runs in a season. And in this case, something this substantial happening again has to deliver a serious blow. What will hopefully not get lost in the shuffle of perfection is just how good the '07 Patriots were.
The Packers' offense this season is not exactly on pace to challenge what the '07 Patriots did, but it could be close. So again, the Packers would have to play above their season averages in order to catch the Patriots' output from ' The real battle is between Rodgers of this season and Brady of ' Through 12 weeks, their numbers look like this:.
Rodgers has the edge in passing yards, as he is currently on pace to break Dan Marino 's record of 5, yards along with Drew Brees and Brady. Touchdown passes will be close, as will the differential. Rodgers has been outrageously careful with the ball thus far despite throwing a pretty egregious for him pick last week to linebacker Chase Blackburn.
Strangely, where the real difference lies is in the defensive output. The Packers are almost always considered to have one of the best defenses in the league thanks to Charles Woodson 's cover capabilities and Clay Matthews ' flowing locks, but this season, the numbers tell us otherwise. The Patriots were able to achieve their record point differential not only because of their incredible offense but because their defense sneakily ranked fourth in both points and yards allowed.
Sure, there were a lot of times where they faced desperate offenses in three- or four-touchdown holes, but impressive nonetheless. If read: when … jinx the Packers go , they'll face light competition in the playoffs based on the brackets if the season ended today. The Saints pose the largest threat to the Packers, much like the '07 Colts did to the Patriots. In the Super Bowl, all bets are off, as the perfect Patriots proved.
And if the Packers face the Patriots this year, the Internet might just explode. Should the Patriots win and avenge their past, hopefully there will still be four banners hanging in Gillette, only now each will feature a Lombardi Trophy.
As for that banner, there might just be a spot in Lambeau for it. Brady was off target most of the night until he sailed that beauty to Eddleman. It took him 40 attempts to reach yds. No TDs and 1 pick. Against the Giants D that is not exactly stout. I will need to see more, but we might be seeing the reality that even 42 year old Brady is still a 42 year old dude trying to play NFL football.
The NFL super soft schedule issued yearly to the Patriots helps..? Break those records and those cell phones LOL. I dont think so, not by damn sight. Those teams were much better. The team that has the largest fine ever given to a Franchise and largest fine ever given to a coach for cheating is still dominating!! There is the problem.
Just look at what the Pats did to the Rams top-5 offense in the last SB. The Chiefs beat Detroit on a fluke goal line turnover, then lost to the Colts, at home, in embarrassing fashion. Spoken like a true Homer. I will need to see more, but we might be seeing the reality that even 42 year old Brady is still a 42 year old.
He completed of 41 passes He started the 3rd Q by completing 15 in a row Then finished the game 20 of I am not entirely dismissive of strength of schedule considerations, even as a Pats fan although I think of it as reparations for that awful schedule following their first championship.
I remember the Packers. Every team they played — even ones that finished with a halfway decent record — was played when the team was either a in the middle of a game losing streak or b starting a rookie QB or new QB the game after the incumbent suffered an injury. They ended up They should have gone 16 and 0. They lost at Kansas City. KC was not only bad but they had just fired their coach and installed Romeo Crennel as interim.
Not only that, they just switched QBs, so Kyle Orton was seeing his first action against the Packers. Anyway, to make a short story long, the Packers were beaten soundly at home in the divisional round by a team they beat a few weeks earlier when that team was in the middle of a 4 game losing streak: the Giants who went on to win the SB that year against a defensively challenged Patriots squad that relied on duct tape, smokr and mirrors, and street signings.
The team was carried by Brady that year. So there is cause for concern yes. But the Patriots have their best D possibly ever and so it will all hinge on whether they can get a rhythm on offense. Too many new faces. Not sure why the team struggles in Miami though…. Flash little dump offs,he looked average at best, lol with that cupcake lot of nobodies they been playing the offense should average 50 a game.
Wait till they start playing real teams — So.. Super Bowl? Man oh man. Omg lol. Like it or not the Patriots WILL in all likelihood be in the Patriots this year and their offense will be better then it is now and the defense will be better too. All this moaning about schedule is hilarious. You play who you play. Bitch about the offense, ridicule who the defense has played, call Brady over the hill, receivers are crap, O line devastated. Belichick focuses on building a team for a playoff run — again.
We will take the scraps off your waived players pile and line them up and smash your favorite team. Tommy even made Danny Amendola look like a winner. People continually point to the AFCE as the major boon for the Pats success when only half their games are played in the division.
The revenue is not increasing. Seats are empty all over the league. This means tv ratings are the key to the money the owners expect to share evenly. Carolina also has this issue now, hence their push for a new stadium. An unnamed owner a few years ago blew up at a meeting all angry because the returns were not better from the current CBA.
They expected to make MORE money since than they have. They are. Get it, little guy? And guess why? And now they are and headed for a division title and probably home field advantage! I will admit that I in all honesty would feel better if more of those differential points had been scored by the offense. But wins are wins and they are The way this is playing out is comical to watch though.
Everyone knows this team has some serious vulnerabilities cough, oline and it really does look like a sure bet this is going to burn them, and darn near has a few times now. But then the team keeps escaping. Sorry folks but this is football. I thought winning it all the previous year meant a more difficult schedule the following year….. They beat the Steelers with a healthy Ben.
Side note: The healthy version of the Patriots offense from week 1 with an actual left tackle would have put up a 50 burger last night. I look at this and wonder if I see a Chiefs hater trying to make their fans look bad by posting comments like this on Pats articles.
As the Chiefs have become legit so has their own hater base grown so they are getting that stuff now. The one good team they played, the Bills, had them on the ropes. Both Rams games were defensive victories. Brady scored a combined 26 points in both games. Only reason they won is because the defense held 2 of the highest offenses in history to 20 points total in both games. Pats O is typical for weeks Pats were even last year after 6 weeks.
They lost three more through the season. Brady has been throwing better than last year, when he was constantly behind or off-target; this year receivers are catching the ball in stride, even quick crossing routes. Hope Josh Gordon is okay. Yes he does but you are still not facing the issue here as usual resorting to name calling and schoolboy taunts.
You haters endless crying is annoying. You are a confused species. Pats are pretty much. Is the offense good enough? Only time will tell. Is the defense good enough? Are the Pats good enough? Will the snow this winter be record breaker?
Get the picture -the schedule is the schedule. The team we see now is not the team we will see 10 weeks from now. This is what we do know the Pats have a history of finishing strong. Does that mean the Pats will be in Miami in February? AS for me with fingers and toes crossed I believe they will. I bet you haters went to area Strong offensive line, good running game with backs that can catch and gain yardage, 3 of the best inside receivers of all time — Gronk, Welker, Edelman — with contributions over the years from Randy Moss, Aaron Hernandez, Brandon Cooks, etc.
Josh McDaniels designing great offensive schemes. Brady himself said Aaron Rodgers would throw for yards with the Patriots. They beat good teams too, when they actually get a chance to play them. So when have you fans of other teams jumped on the chiefs bandwagon? They have shown signs of struggling offensively ————————————————————————————— Which NFL team is not showing some flaw or sign of struggling?
This team relies on the defense and special teams and will go Brady is just along for the ride this year. Teams struggle just to get a first down and barely get to FG range on their own. Harry is eligible to practice Monday and Wynn is not far behind. If you think this team will not get better you are fooling yourself. Been there, done that and got the banners to prove it. One would think NE is going to lose a game sooner or later.
Other teams should take note of that one. Not to mention, held the Steelers to only 3 points to open the season with Ben Roethlisberger playing. The Bills have a top 3 defense. Buffalo is allowing just 14 points per game. As for the people up above talking about Brady getting carried, remind me who had a defense ranked 31st in total yards given up in , allowed 28 points against the Panthers in Super Bowl XXXVIII, allowed 31 points against the Ravens in the divisional round game, allowed 41 points in Super Bowl LII, allowed 40 points against the Chiefs last season, and allowed 31 points in the AFC championship game.
Belichick needs Brady. Ever notice the Patriots defense plays without fear? I think we can all admit that Brady is off to a slower start this year given the injuries to O-line and skill players. Add3 rushing TDs to boot.
QB rating of Completely agree. Was a different game back then, but I firmly believe that the 92,93,94 Cowboys teams and the fours 49ers SB teams could and would beat any of the 9 SB Patriots teams. Nine SBs, that is just insane. They beat good teams too, when they actually get a chance to play them —————. Oh look…. Tanking and stinking in the NFL now starts in September so there will be a lot of to records this year.
Just like there is a multiple team race to go or Defender grabs the arms of a receiver preventing him from catching the ball……DPI flag thrown. Patriots defender grabs the arms of a receiver preventing him from catching the ball…..
And the Patriots homers complain about the refs. So yeah…. I would say they would have been easily as dominant. I agree that Pats opponents this far are weak. However every one of those teams wants to be the team to beat New England because no one gives them a chance in the first place. Also the Patriots game plans of offense so far have been very vanilla.
While the naysayers are screaming about look at their opponents, this defense is for real and anyone who has been following NE for years knows this to be true. The injuries are stacking up all over the offensive side of the ball. If Brady looks pedestrian all year and hoists another Lombardi at the end of it because of the Pats D.

He had two rushing touchdowns on Oct. Kansas City. Rookie RB Damien Harris had his first rushing attempts of his career, finishing with four carries for 12 yards in the fourth quarter. TE Ben Watson played in his first game of the Patriots of the season and his first since the season.
Watson played his first six seasons in New England, after joining the team as a first-round draft pick out of Georgia in It was his first start as a member of the Patriots since Dec. He caught a yard pass from Tom Brady in the first quarter, his first for the Patriots since a 3-yard pass from Brady in the fourth quarter of an AFC Wild Card game vs.
Baltimore on Jan. He finished the game with three receptions for 18 yards. On Jacksonville's next possession, New England lineman Ty Warren forced a fumble while sacking Garrard, and linebacker Mike Vrabel recovered it at the Jaguars yard line. Several plays later, Maroney scored a 1-yard touchdown run to give New England a 14—7 lead.
Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew muffed the ensuing kickoff and was downed at his own 5-yard line. For the third time in a row, New England drove deep into Jacksonville territory. On the last play, he took a snap in shotgun formation with Kevin Faulk to his right, Brady jumped in the air with his arms raised to make it look like a play used by the Patriots before where Faulk took the direct snap.
The Jaguars defense followed Faulk, leaving Wes Welker open in the end zone, and Brady threw him the ball for a touchdown to give the Patriots a 21—14 lead. Jacksonville responded with a drive to the New England yard line, but receiver Dennis Northcutt dropped a pass on third down, forcing them to settle for a Josh Scobee yard field goal, cutting the score to 21— On New England's next drive, Jacksonville's Derek Landri was assessed a roughing-the-passer penalty, turning Welker's 6-yard catch into a yard gain.
An unnecessary roughness penalty and a yard reception by Reggie Williams on the Jacksonville's next drive set up a yard field goal by Scobee, which cut the Jaguars deficit to one touchdown, 28— Harrison's interception was his 7th career postseason pick, a Patriots record. This was also his fourth consecutive postseason game with an interception, tying an NFL record held by Aeneas Williams. With this win, the Patriots advanced to the AFC title game for the second year in a row and extended their perfect record to 17—0, matching the final record of the Miami Dolphins.
With this win, the Patriots became the first NFL team to start with an 18—0 record and advanced to their fourth Super Bowl appearance in seven years. One play later, Brady's yard touchdown pass to Jabar Gaffney increased their lead to 14—6. Later on, a yard run by Darren Sproles moved the ball to the New England yard line. But once again, the Patriots defense kept San Diego out of the end zone, stopping them on 3rd and 1 and forcing them to settle for another Kaeding field goal, making the score 14—9 at halftime.
On the opening drive of the second half, Brady threw his second interception of the game, this one to Drayton Florence at the New England yard line. San Diego then moved the ball to the 4-yard line, but on 3rd and 1, linebacker Junior Seau tackled Michael Turner for a 2-yard loss and the Chargers had to settle for Kaeding's fourth field goal. Following a Chargers punt, the Patriots ended the game with a play drive that took the final off the game clock.
After scoring a combined 73 points in their regular season meeting, the teams scored only a mere 10 points by the end of the third quarter, with the Patriots leading 7 to 3. The game marked the first time that a previously undefeated team had lost in a National Football League championship game since the Chicago Bears as the Patriots fell to 18—1 on the season. The Patriots were also the second team to enter the Super Bowl undefeated, joining the Miami Dolphins , who reached Super Bowl VII with a 16—0 record and won to become the first and to date only NFL team to win the league championship after going all the way through the regular season and playoffs undefeated and untied, but were the first undefeated and untied team to fail to win the Super Bowl.
But New England halted the drive at their own yard line, forcing the Giants to settle for a yard field goal from Lawrence Tynes that gave New York a 3—0 lead. However, on that play, New York linebacker Antonio Pierce committed pass interference by striking the helmet of tight end Benjamin Watson in the end zone, giving New England 1st-and-goal at the 1.
This set up a Maroney 1-yard touchdown run two plays later, the first play of the second quarter, for a 7—3 lead. The two teams each only had one drive in the entire opening quarter, a Super Bowl record. But three plays later, Manning threw a pass that bounced out of the arms of rookie receiver Steve Smith and into the hands of cornerback Ellis Hobbs for an interception. But after the officials picked through the pile, it was determined that Bradshaw had made the recovery.
The Giants maintained possession and wound up punting. Smith recovered the ball, however Bradshaw was penalized for illegally batting the ball forward before the recovery. The penalty pushed the Giants out of field goal range, and following an incompletion, they were forced to punt. The game then went to halftime with the Patriots leading 7—3. On the first drive of the second half, New England had a 4th-and-2 and chose to punt.
Brady's pass to Jabar Gaffney was incomplete as it went out of the back of the end zone and the Giants took over on downs. Following three runs by Bradshaw and a yard reception by Smith on third down, Manning finished the 7-play, yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass to David Tyree , giving New York a 10—7 lead with left in the game. After consecutive three-and-outs by the Patriots and Giants, New England got the ball at its own 20 with to play.
Brady then completed a 5-yard pass to Wes Welker and a yard pass to Moss, followed by a 9-yard run by Maroney to give the Patriots a first down at their own Following two incomplete passes, New York cornerback Corey Webster slipped while backing into coverage, leaving Moss wide open in the end zone where Brady found him for a touchdown to give New England a 14—10 lead with left in the game. On the ensuing kickoff, Ray Ventrone tackled Domenik Hixon after a yard return, giving New York the ball on their own 17 with left and three timeouts remaining.
On the next play, the Giants faced 3rd-and-5 from their own 44 with remaining. Manning spun out of the grasp of lineman Jarvis Green , righted himself, and threw a yard completion to Tyree , who made a leaping catch while covered by Rodney Harrison and maintained possession by pinning the ball against his helmet with one hand as he fell to the ground. Two plays later, on 3rd-and, Manning found a wide-open Smith for a yard gain to the New England Rodney Harrison tried to adjust the unbalanced formation but his fellow defenders, including Junior Seau, were eager to sack Manning and the defense was left unchanged.
After the incompletion, the game clock briefly read zero one second was re-added , and coaches, players, reporters, and fans crowded the field as if the game had ended. This early departure was later criticized by some sportswriters who felt Belichick was being a sore loser, while others noted that he had properly congratulated Coughlin they also noted Coughlin was one of the few opposing coaches he didn't loathe and that the game was over once the Patriots failed to convert on 4th down.
The officials cleared the field, and restarted the clock. Bill Belichick, and numerous players, were the recipients of awards for their performances in the regular season: . Eight Patriots were elected to the Pro Bowl , the most since Wilfork, Mankins, Koppen, and wide receiver Wes Welker were named to the second team. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Unfortunately, the Vikings season came to an abrupt and heart breaking end in the NFC Championship game when they were upset by the Atlanta Falcons in overtime. Embed from Getty Images. The defending world champion Washington Redskins steamrolled through the competition in and looked like a sure bet to defend their title. Their two losses in the regular season were two of the greatest games of the season. They lost their season opener at home to Dallas and lost mid-season to the Green Bay Packers.
They rolled through the divisional round of the playoffs destroying the Los Angeles Rams The NFC Championship was much closer as the Redskins raced to a lead but had to hold on for a victory over the San Francisco 49ers helped by some very questionable calls during the 4 th quarter.
Led by quarterback Roman Gabriel and the famed fearsome foursome defense, the Rams dominated the competition. Their biggest win of the season was when they beat the eventual Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers. They had 10 blowout victories by more than 10 points with a per game point differential of Unfortunately, the Rams were done in by a rule at the time which rotated home teams each year for the playoffs.
This meant that even though the Rams had a better record than the Packers and even beat them during the season they still had to travel to Green Bay for what was called then the Conference Championship where they eventually lost The Patriots came out of nowhere in to advance to the NFL playoffs for the first time in team history. The eventual Super Bowl champions suffered their only loss to New England The Patriots were led by a dominating running game that, for the season, averaged 5 yards per rush.
The Patriots looked dead in the water at mid-season with a record but they ended up winning 6 straight games to make it to the playoffs where they would meet the Oakland Raiders again. The Rams started the season with 6 straight wins. Then came two close losses on the road to the Vikings and the Falcons. They followed that with another 6 game winning streak to end the season. They led the NFL in point differential, turnover margin and blowout victories.
Harold Jackson led all NFL receivers in touchdown receptions with Despite being tied with Minnesota and Miami for the best record in the NFL and despite beating Dallas earlier in the season, they had to travel to Dallas for the Divisional Playoff game where they were lost Up until the mids, home field advantage in the NFL playoffs was not dependent on who had the best record.
Home field was rotated between Division winners. To me, there is little doubt about the number one spot on this list. If not for the miraculous off the helmet catch by David Tyree, the Patriots may have been considered the greatest team in NFL history.
They are still the only team to complete a 16 game season undefeated. The Patriots point differential was an astounding They won 12 games by 10 or more points with Tom Brady becoming the first quarterback in NFL history to throw 50 Touchdown passes and Randy Moss catching 23 of those touchdown passes. They had a record versus playoff teams, 3 of which were division winners. Without question, the Patriots were the best team not win a Super Bowl.
